Cayman Islands Information

The Cayman Islands are located approximately 1 hour (via plane) south of Miami and is made up of three islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac.  Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands and is approximately 76 square miles.  It is 22 miles long and 8 miles wide.  Cayman Brac  and Little Cayman are located approximately 85 miles northeast of Grand Cayman.  These “sister islands,” as they are called, can be reached via inter-island flights on Island Air or Cayman Airways Express.

As a British Overseas Territory, the Cayman Islands governor is appointed by the Queen.  With a remarkably stable democracy, this country is the world’s fifth larges financial center.  There are more banks and investment firms per square acre than anywhere else on the globe.  But what is most important when you visit this unique gem of the Caribbean, is how peaceful, safe, and remarkably crime free it is. To all US & Canada residents: This means that while in Cayman you must drive on the left side of the road! Remember, when crossing the road look right then left!!

National symbols:

The national bird is the Grand Cayman Green Parrot.  With iridescent green feathers, white crowns, rosy cheeks, and a boisterous squawk these birds are a wonderful sight to see- and hear!  The national flower is the Wild Banana Orchid.  These beautiful flowers bloom most prevalently after a rain fall during May and June.  The national tree is the Silver Thatch Palm.  This tree is unique to the Cayman Islands and is not found anywhere else in the world.  Throughout Caymanian history this tree was quite useful.  It was manufactured into strong and durable rope.
